History
Wrexham AFC Supporters Club was born in August 1926 at the Black Lion pub in Hope Street, Wrexham. The driving force behind Wrexham’s first supporters’ club was Jack Williams who was born in Summerhill in 1898. Jack saw his first Wrexham match in 1910, a Birmingham League encounter with Hednesford Town and was inspired to form a supporters’ club. He was a man of great vision who recognised the importance of fans working together and with Tom Hodgson of Northampton Town, formulated the idea of the National Federation of Football Supporters’ Clubs, which was inaugurated in 1927.
The ’Nat Fed’ played a very important role in representing and campaigning for fans’ interests before it merged with the Football Supporters Association (FSA) to form the Football Supporters federation (FSF). The FSF has taken the supporters’ movement forward to broaden its appeal and influence within English and Welsh football.
Our work has seen us instigate the Player of the Season award in 1975, Brian Lloyd, being the first ever winner of the Jack Williams Trophy, whilst we took a decision to start a Hall of Fame in 2002 that recognises those people who have contributed so much to Wrexham AFC. Today you can see all those inaugurated to date having a framed photo in the Bamford’s suite, aptly named after the club’s greatest ever goalscorer Tommy Bamford.
Over the years the Supporters’ Association has played a major role in the success of the Football Club. Raising vast sums of money and pioneering many other services. The list is varied and as long as your arm and include such projects as funding the cover on the old Tech End terracing; building the old stand on the Kop; running the Centre Spot Club Shop in the old Mold Road Stand; running the away travel scheme for many years, as well as car boot sales; hospital broadcasts; celebrity dinners new seats in the stands; floodlight bulbs. Most recently we refurbished the Executive Room; purchased a new player tunnel.
We had 2,500 members at the height of our success, but the Supporters’ Association are still very much involved with the Football Club as we help to raise funds for Wrexham Football Club through the 50/50 competition and helping out on match days by managing the University car park.
We are a small but dedicated committee, and our efforts are purely voluntary. In 2026 we will be celebrating our centenary and will be looking for ways and support to celebrate that momentous achievement.
